Why I Chose Public Relations

November 23, 2011

I’m the kind of person that loves to interact with people, write, organize events and think outside the box (what box?). When I learned that PR would allow me to do all of the above, I was ecstatic.

I became interested in public relations as a sophomore. I fell in love with the idea of creating materials and ideas that would help better society. I have always believed in the need for charity and sadly, sometimes the very organizations that are there to help us don’t have the necessary tools to reach out to the community.

I’ve learned that with the use of public relations practices, we can help those agencies get the word out to get people in need. For that reason, I chose to do an internship with the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. There I learned more about the ins and outs of a non-profit setting and affirmed my passion and devotion to its cause.

I’ve always pictured myself working a high-stress job that requires for me to think on my feet, do lots of planning and of course, master the art of diplomacy. It wasn’t until I joined my sorority, AOII that I began to see how public relations affects organizations, both internally and externally.

This semester I’m a junior and I can honestly say that every day I fall more in love with my field. I love the late nights spent studying strategies. I live for the case study analyses that we do in class.

The some most enriching experiences in my career as a public relations student have been volunteering for Eckerd and interning at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. I have gotten the stellar opportunity to see PR first hand, to try my hand at it and to live it.
